Our train aficionados probably know that Union Pacific has taken legal action against Lionel for Trademark Infringement. According to Lionel the action is over: and itís good news for the modeling community.
For quite some time Union Pacific has been taking legal steps against Lionel for trademark licensing issues.
These legal actions have been an ongoing battle as far back as 2002. Union Pacific (UP) has not only gone after Lionel, but other related companies.
The most recent action was in February of 2006. Union Pacific is vigerously trying to protect not only the UP logo but its Southern Pacific Lines log, and its Western Pacific logo. Based on news accounts it looks like they have settled.
In an open letter on its website Lionel announces that it has come to a licensing agreement with UP. Lionel will be able to use the UP logos.
This is good news for Lionel and for the modeling community in general. There have been a number of legal issues with copy write infringement issues. A win for the modeling side is a win for the longevity of the industry.Lionel News Page Related Story
