While this site is about ship modeling, I consider inspiration part of the modeling process (for myself, anyway). Coming out in 2016 is a film made by the Disney Company about one of maritime histories greatest rescue at sea stories.
In February, 1952 the tanker
SS Pendleton broke in half in a storm off the US coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A Coast Guard rescue launch with a crew of 4 saved 33 out of the 34 crewman of the
Pendleton. A
book was published about
the event in 2010 and now the story gets the big film treatment.
There's been more than a few movies about great naval encounters and I'm glad to see the Coast Guard get a film about what is one of their greatest rescue missions.
Here's the
trailer.
Glencoe Models is able to capitalize on the forthcoming film since they've offered the Coast Guard boat used for the rescue
as a kit for years.
The actual boat is around today, preserved by the
Orleans Historical Society, of Olreans Massachussetts.
