about the figure
The figure is the first piece manufactured under Bestsoldiers brand, and it is inspired from the period of the most uneven battle of the history, the battle of Thermopylae.
The figure is a bravely and proud standing Spartan Officer.
The figure comes in 125 x 95 x 50 mm.s black cardboard box. The front cover shows a photo of the painted figure from 3 different angles front, back and right side of the figure, and a close-up photo of the Hoplon's painting details.Boxart is painted by Diego Ruina and can serve as a simple painting guide.
Inside the box, you find the pieces of the figure securely sandwiched between three black polyfoam slabs. There is no historical or painting guide for the figure.
The figure is sculpted by Fausto Gutierres and made up of 8 white metal parts. All parts are cast clean and crisp in very good details. There is not much need for a serious clean up, filling or sanding. A fast clean of slightly visible vertical seamlines and brushing using a metal brush and washing will make it ready for priming.
The figure has two main parts;
Torso with legs: He wears a Spartan muscle armour with leather straps. These kind of cuirasses were effective at deflecting a blow from a spear, sword, arrow dart or stone, all which were employed by the ancient Greek warriors. Legs are protected with Spartan greaves.
Cloak: He also wears a impressive Spartan cloak.
Other parts are;
Head : He wears an ancient Korinthian type helmet with crest. The details are nicely sculpted.
Hoplon : The classic Spartan round shield which can be painted with decorative motives. The handgrip are cast on the shield.
Right arm : Holding the sword. It shows nice muscular details.
Left arm : Posed to hold the shield. The armband is cast on the arm. The assembly with the shield may need attention.
Scabbard : Will be attached on the left side of the figure.
Figure base : A simple one with ground texture.
Sculpture and casting are first class. Assembling a 75 mm figure can be a nightmare but this one will be just fun. A very good first product of Bestsoldiers , so a must have in the collection. I wish luck to our friend Marco Ganghini of Bestsoldiers on marketing this nice piece and manufacturing the new ones in the near future.
