Sculpting a Knights Helm

This SBS is designed for those looking to make a Helm but can be used to make any type of helmet with some adjustment to the technique used. I will be working in 54 mm-1/32 scale but this can be used for any scale you choose. The idea is to create a hollow helm suitable for accessories to a Diorama/Vignette or to be held by a knight.

Tools needed...You will need only basic tools for the job.

  • 0 size brush
  • Large needle or thin wire
  • Craft knife
  • Styrene tube for use as rolling pin
  • Talc powder
  • Sanding stick

    step 1
First start by finding a suitable styrene rod representing the diameter for the scale you wish to create the Helm, for this I used the shaft from a pen, this will enable you to make a hollow design and also give you something to hold your work with. Using a pair of pliers crimp the end of the tube slightly to create a oval shape, this is optional and if you are creating a round Helm leave your tube as it is.(image 1&2)

    step 2
Next using a permanent marker make a mark on one of the raised sides of the tube, this is going to be the front of the sculpting from now on.Now coat the end of the pen (about 2cm) with vaseline and roll out some putty to about 1mm thick. When rolling putty its a good idea to coat the rolling surface with talc powder and also the rolling impliment to prevent sticking.(image 3&4)

    step 3
Cut a strip of the putty and wrap it around the end of the tube and overlap the ends, using a sharp blade cut through the putty at the front edge and blend the two cut edges into each other, when blended smooth the joint with a water moistened brush.

Trim the bottom of the putty to shape and also the top to the edge of the tube. Using your blade gently mark a centre line down the front of the helm as reference for marking the eye slots and air vents.(image 5,6&7)
