Hi,
I am in the process of finishing up on a couple of 1/35th scale German officers and would like to know how to paint the braids on their uniforms/hats? some of them have silver braids and the other has gold braids. Also, I would like to know how to paint them so that it looks like braids and not like someone how painted them.
Thank you.

I generally paint them using a very fine brush and use a pin wash of raw umber oil paint on them afterward (any dark wash would probably work) The idea being that the umber falls into the recesses of the braiding and along either side. It gives depth and tones down the gold/silver
Of course you can experiment to determine how much you want the metallic color to stand out by strengthening or lessening the amount of dark wash you apply.

Cheers,
C.
